Some use a percentage setting and some use 0-9 numbers instead. Both work just as well and it is more a personal preference. I have copied a depth chart for an example.
You can see I have the 2 styles to set distro in the positons. I do recomend you only use one type of setting for each fomation. If you use the 0-99 method on your RB then I would use that for your WR and TE also to avoid confusion
If it is confusing I may need to take another look at how I worded that. It was only supposed to be an example of the 2 styles of setting distro and by no means a way of setting up running %, well unless you have Mike Vick as your QB.

And everyone excuse all of my typing errors, I do have a college education believe it or not . I type fast and with a wireless keyboard I miss some strokes on occasion. I will get it cleaned up one of these days.

Each offers something a little different and can be helpful in analyzing talent and players.

great job dukelegend, I'm sure this will be a big help to the newbies. Any chance this could be stickified?

Several worlds begin recruiting and start of season games soon. Good luck to everyone, it seems the WiS promo and Fox have at least filled the worlds.

Great thread Duke. This is the first i've seen of it. Very informative.

Very impressive guys. Nice work, my hats off to you all.
Newbies should take this information and study it very, very carefully. If they use it wisely, they will find this game as addicting and fun as the rest of us!

Anyone know how to get a thread set up so it doesn't have to be bumped every day to keep it on the 1st page?

Phase VIII-Roster Management
This was an area I forgot to mention in my original posting. The certain number of players by position for your team will vary much by the sets you run, the stamina of your players, and by some small measure what teams in your conference run. I will break down numbers by set, mind you these are general guidlines. Make adjustments as you see fit.
BALANCED ATTACK
QB-3 ***This is my basic breakdown for a balanced team. i.e. I
RB-6 run ND Box/Shotgun/Pro-set on offense and 4-4/
WR-6 Nickel/Dime on defense. This set-up gives you some
TE-3 depth and versatility.****
OL-8
DL-8
LB-7
DB-8
K/P-1
SHOTGuN/TRIPS RuN AND SHOOT STYLE
QB-4
RB-2 ***Running a wide open p***ing attack leads to your
WR-8 defense being on the field alot more thus the extra
TE-2 players to add depth on defense. On defense I have
OL-8 this set for the 4-4 and also if you choose the 5-2.
DL-9/10
LB-7/5
DB-9/10
K/P-1
ND BOX RuN DOMINANT
QB-2 ***This set is for a power ND Box running attack.
RB-6 The extra TE and OL give depth to grind out yardage
WR-4 on the ground. The 4 WR also give you the ability to
TE-4 run Trips formation for long yardage situations.
OL-10 Ample depth at RB lets you keep players fresh.***
DL-8
LB-7
DB-8
K/P-1
WISHBONE GROUND ATTACK
QB-3 ***I like this set-up to run a WB attack. I like to carry
RB-7 2 running type QB if I can find them and 1 p***ing QB.
WR-4 Again, ample depth at all ositions and the 4 WR lets
TE-3 keep trips in reserve for long yardage spots.***
OL-9
DL-8
LB-7
DB-8
K/P-1
These are just some basic breakdowns and you can adjust as your style dictates. If you prefer the 5-2 package over the 4-4 then this is usually a good set-up for depth.
DL-10
LB-5
DB-8
This all boils down to preference and depth as the main considerations. To spread out recruiting cl***es or redshirts you may need to run thin at one position for a season or two. Just ensure you have at LEAST one back-up for each position except kicker or punter. Many such as myself only prefer to carry 1 kicker/punter because 1. they never get hurt and 2. one guy can do both jobs o.k. and it free's up an elxtra slot for position players.

Find a Mentor-
Now I know this is hard for some to do, that i ask for help. Most of us men dont like to ask for ***istance with anything and that is just our nature. If you have not read or put anything else I have written to use then please try this.
Find a coach who has had some success and send them a sitemail. usually most will be happy to answer a question or two and most will share some tidbits on gameplanning, recruiting, or other general tactics. Now some may not respond and dont pester the living crap out of them as many have lives outside GD, multiple teams, etc... or just limited time. Most will be happy to answer questions for you an some wont.
Many in the GD community enjoy the competition and want to have competative games are willing to share their experience with other coaches.
Good luck to all the newer coaches and I hope GD it as addictive and enjoyable for you as it is for me. I won the first of many (I hope) National Championship games yesterday and all I can tell you is it feels great. It took 600 games to do it and a great team that was prepared by a great coach. Learn from the mistakes you mak in recruiting and read the forums. Alot of good info is here and ANY question ever ask on the forums will get answered. It may not be the "secrets" some coaches have figured out that leads to winning but it will put you in the right direction to find out yourself.

Ya do that, that is what i did, i actually asked two successful coaches whom i had coached with in previous seaons, and they helped me with recruiting, and my game plan and helped turn my team from just average to CC material.

Fantastic thread duke, hopefully some of the new coaches will take the time to read this. The game is involved, but once you understand the basics you can really start seeing results. Don't be intimidated by how much there is to learn, the game moves slowly for a reason.

There is plenty of time to pick up things as you play, and your first season or 2 should totally be dedicated as learning experiences. Unless you pick up a powerhouse school and spend a lot of time reading these forums, you probably won't win the national championship in your first few seasons.

Ask questions from your conference mates, from your other opponents, and people you see posting regularly on this forum. Most coaches who have been around for a while are more than willing to help new coaches figure out how this game works. You'll have a great time on this site if you have the patience and dedication to put together a team.
