Yes, that is a simplistic approach that some people have used, and feel it helped them.Much more fundamental to the recruiting process is developing an understanding of what level of recruit you will be able to sign with minimum, average or maximum effort given the prestige of your program. That is a subtle relationship that a lot of coaches don't even attempt to grasp, (and if you are one of those coaches, read no further in this post.)You can get an early feel for this relationship, however, even in your first or second season of recruiting. Use about half your budget for this. Consider only recruits that are close to you. Let x = the number of open schollies you have. Select about x/6 recruits that you think are so good that it would take a heavy effort for you to land them, about x/6 recruits that you think are right in the middle of your optimum range to pursue, and about x/6 who you think should be slam dunks to land. Recruit only these recruits, equal to roughly half of your incoming cl***, through the signing cycle. Examine your results. You may find that you shot too high, that the top guys you pursued were way out of your range, snapped up or fought over by programs with a lot more prestige than yours, against whom you had no chance. You may find that even the guys you thought were slam dunks were not as easy to get as you expected. On the other hand, you may have shot too low, with the best recruits you went after turning out to be easily landed, and the lower tier having no place on your roster. Regardless of whether you shot too high, too low, or in the right range, you will have learned valuable lessons, and hopefully picked up some recruits as well. Now you can apply what you have learned to filling out your cl***. Your result should be a cl*** that is serviceable and a Head Coach that will be a much more skilled recriuter next season and in seasons to come.

Here's another map resource, NOT limited to D-II despite the title:What state or area is best for D2

I have a guy that was signed as a RB by my AC. I didn't like his numbers there and didn't really need here there either. I did, however, need a TE-badly. So, I switched him over.

He saw some gametime because I have only him and one other guy playing that position.

Over the course of the season, however, he surprised me by growing 30 points.

Is this common? Or do I have an unexpected gem here?
In addition to what snake responded, also note that (IN GENERAL) players with lower ratings can grow faster than players with higher ratings. A player with the same potential will grow faster when he is at the 350 level than he would at the 650 level. When players get close the 90 level in their ratings (D1), it is difficult to increase their ratings no matter how much practice they get.You will notice this on your own players. If you draft an OL with 50 STR and only 25 BLK, if you put the same number of minutes of practice toward each attribute, at the end of the season, you'll see that his BLK increases more than his STR.So since most AC recruits are very low in all their attributes, they do tend to increase pretty quickly when given playing time and practice.I would also be willing to bet that AC recruits tend to be in the Above Average potential category because that would make sense for the game, so as not to handicap new coaches too much. Of course, I have no basis for that belief.

Lol, thanks for the response Sluggo (only took ten months to get an answer) ... hopefully the answer helps others.

Should I be recruiting more than once per day or is once per day effective? Time is tight between work and family.

WIS's position is "Recruiting lasts 9 days to accomodate everyone's schedule." However, it is generally accepted that the first day(s) of recruiting are the most important. You probably will need to be able to recruit at multiple cycles each day to be competitive. It is possible to get some marginal recruits after signings in one or two log ins, but IMO this will only bring your team to average. Keep in mind that, if you can recruit immediately before an update and wait a few minutes for the site to be updated, you can then recruit again, thus having 2 recruiting cycles in one log in.

Has this been updated to refect the new stamina settings I for one, am having all kinds of stamina issues with all of my positions where in previous seasons, not.

Are able to cut players before or after the next recruiting period begins

Provided you have additional seasons, you can cut players during the job change period, immediately before the season rolls over

Why is the rescinding of scholarships timed that way? If a new coach is taking over a poor team, it seems like he/she ought not be saddled with ALL of his predecessor's (or AI's) mistakes.

Some of the recent posts about what areas have advantages or disadvantages in recruiting got me thinking...so I created this:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=113161989256958002320.000441f5d3b75819a862b&ll=39.232253,-99.404297&spn=44.89154,80.947266&z=4&om=1

For me at least, it is helpful to have a visual that shows the distribution of schools across the country. It is a bit cluttered until you zoom in, but for about 75% of the schools I got the marker right on top of their campus.

I hope somebody finds this useful besides me. What are the odds that I'd hit my school (Dickinson) on the first click...especially since it's buried in the middle of that huge cluster of schools in Pennsylvania.

It would make sense to put it during the new coach hire phase -- imeediately before recruiting. However, I think that the reasoning is the sim adds the appropriate amount per scholarship to the recruiting budget when the season rolls over. To allow for rescinding scholarships afterwards would (guessing here) likely require re-writing of the code to have it re-calculate the night before recruiting starts.

Newbie questions

1). What is an AC recruit?

2). What is the best way to find out potential?

3). Is there some kind of "character" rating? I thought I've seen that somewhere on these forums.

1). What is an AC recruit? It is a player that the sim signs on your behalf because you failed to fill all your allotted schollies. They are essentially worthless to penalize you.

2). What is the best way to find out potential? Send either an AC or HC scout. The report's 1st line is the potential. The AC scout IMO is easier to understand potential

3). Is there some kind of "character" rating? I thought I've seen that somewhere on these forums. You used to be albe to kick players off the team for showing up late for practice. This was done away with

One of the reasons is probably so that new coaches don't come in and start cutting players before they know what they are doing. At least after one full season, hopefully coaches have a little bit of a clue as to who they can afford to cut and who they shouldn't. It's not all about how bad a player is. You also have to consider your depth, the amount of scholarships available, etc.
