I dont think it matters how many offensive sets you use. But on defensive I like to use 4. 5-2, 4-3, Nickel and Dime. This system has worked for me. Most of my teams are very successful and my Beloit in D III in Stagg just took the NC with those Def sets.
One thing to remember is that there are many dif ways to win in this game. I knew one coach that used the 3-4 almost exclusively. I always was amazed how effective it could be, especially vs. the run which in theory it shouldn't be. It had to be the "Makeup" of the players And his strategies.

Ok, I have a question about making adjustment at halftime of the game, how do you do it? Because I was down in our second game 10-7 at the half and ended up loosing 40-7 and I couldnt figure out how to do adjustments. And Im sure my team didnt just stop playing at the end and it had to do with the other team making adjustments and I didnt? And just how much do adjustments at the half make on the outcome of the game? If anyone can help me out Id appriciate it!

After the 1st half (which sims at 2:30 AM eastern time) you have 12 hours to adjust your game plan and depth chart. You do this the exact same way you adjust it between games.
Go to the "Office" page, and there is a button on the right for "Depth Chart". There are 2 types of depth charts: basic and advanced. The advanced charts are the only ones that actually directly affect who is on the field. So if you want to make depth chart adjustments between games or at halftime, you must change the advanced depth charts.
To adjust your game plan, go to the "Game Plan" button on the right side of the "Office" screen. You can make these adjustments between games or at halftime.
All of this info should be in the FAQ (or help page...I cant remember what it's called now) and also within this GD 101 thread. I know it's very long, but investing in an hour or so to read over it will answer these and 100's of other questions you haven't even thought of yet.

What attributes would you say are most important for a p*** rushing DL? Does anybody actually carry players that are just p*** rushers?
8/20/2007 8:49 AM
Somebody a while back did a study over several seasons and determined that GI and Technique help make a DL a better p*** rusher.
However, it didn't look like it made a major difference. There are so many factors (ability of the QB & O-line you're facing, the opponent's aggressiveness settings, we don't know who is on the field on which plays, etc) that it's hard to truly make any definate conclusions as to which attributes matter most.
I know that in real life strength, technique, elusiveness, and speed would all be the most important qualities, but apparently that's not necessarily the case in this game.
Also, you will notice that the majority of your sacks will come from linebackers and defensive backs anyway.
My advice would be just to put your worst D-linemen in your p***ing defenses and your best D-linemen in your rushing defenses. Since D-linemen are rarely involved in the play against the p*** anyway, you can conserve your best guys' energy by resting them against the p***.

When WIS wiped out so much of this thread, this became harder to find.

Let's keep it where we can find it easily. GL, everyone.

Note that my_kids' scenario will not be possible under GD 2.0.

Instead of Normal, Red Zone, and Two-Minute, the boxes are now Normal, Red Zone, and Inactive. Rather than marking Two-Minute plays within your current plan, you can use a completely separate plan at the end of the half and the game. (If you choose to run a separate game plan then, it operates both at the end of the second half and the end of the second quarter.)

Each row may be either Normal only, Red Zone only, both Normal and Red Zone, or Inactive.

You must have at least one of the three plays in each group (Long, Medium, Short) checked for Normal and at least one checked for Red Zone.

Also, this might be useful for everyone to know, from the first 2.0 dev chat. Note: I reworded things to make them, at least to me, easier to understand. Any misinterpretations are mine.

This is the new general logic in place for when to kick a field goal, punt, or go for the first down:

1) If less than 15 seconds in the half and no TOs or less than 10 seconds ....kick the field goal regardless of the score --- all settings. Note that this was stated as two separate conditions, if down by 3 or less and otherwise, but it's the same outcome. I do not know if this is overridden by #3 - I believe some people think it is not, although it should be.

2) If it is overtime and down 3 or less on 4th down kick the FG --- all settings.

3) If it is in the 4th quarter and 2 minutes or less remaining down by 4 or more, go for the first down regardless of aggressiveness setting and field position.

4) In FG range --- check for FG or GO based upon the base offense style for the currently active game plan:

Very Conservative: always kick

Conservative: kick if not in 4th quarter with less than half remaining
OR down 3 or less
OR more than 1 yard to go
OR outside the 5 yard line
otherwise go for it

Balanced: kick if not in 4th quarter
OR down 3 or less
OR more than 1 yard to go
OR outside the opponents' 20
otherwise go for it

Aggressive: kick the FG if up 8 to down 3
OR more than 3 yards to go
OR outside the opponents' 40
otherwise go for it

Very Aggressive: kick the FG if up 8 to down 3 with less than half the 4th quarter remaining
OR if more than 4 yards to go
otherwise go for it

5) NOT in FG range --- check for PUNT or GO based upon the base offense style for the currently active game plan:

Very Conservative: always punt

Conservative: only go for it on 4th and 1 when losing in the second half of the 4th quarter past midfield
otherwise punt

Balanced: go for it on 4th and 1 from midfield to FG range
AND go on 4th and 1 when losing in the second half of the 4th quarter from to midfield
otherwise punt

Aggressive: go for it on 4th and 1 from to FG range
AND go for it on 4th and 2 from to FG range
AND go for it on 4th and 3 or less from midfield to FG range
otherwise punt

Very Aggressive: go for it on 4th and 1 from to FG range
AND go for it on 4th and 2 or less from to FG range
AND go for it on 4th and 3 or less from to FG range
AND go for it on 4th and 4 or less from midfield to FG range
otherwise punt

i would think that with the changes that 2.0 put in that most of the info here will need updating....perhaps even a new thread.

I have cleaned some of this up and much of what I is still very applicable to 2.0 but much must be relearned. I was in 2.0 beta but I must admit my GD time has been reduced to checking the sigh every 2-3 days and running the same game plans for the entire season. I hope some young blood comes up with something better and I will remove the Comp***. I am in a new part of my life and GD is on the back, back burner. My Duke team (until I get fired) will be my last team and the co-coaching effort I run with gadawg will be my only teams and those will be with minimal efort.
I hope this post has helped many new GD coaches and I also want to thank guys like dwhit34, cyph, jeffkahleb (its only a game guys), gadawg(my eternal homie and life partner =p), rc1990, etc, etc, etc.........there are hundreds of great guys who I would love to share a brew with and meet in real life. This is a great time p***er and one day I hope I have the fire again to try and rule the world! Good luck everyone and best of luck especially with your real lives.....sometimes people forget this is just for fun and that other things that we see here are more important than a 3rd down setting. Peace out and this will be my last post in the Comp***.......Ohh and GO HOKIES!!!!!!!
