I ran an assistant coach search at A- prestige (D1) Tennessee. My assistant found players rated B, C, C, F, and F. Unless I'm really missing something, it seems like assistant coach searching is going to be a really bad way to discover players. FSS is always going to be more cost-effective (unless there are some players that are not covered by FSS? seble?). Or maybe it's more effective at D2 and D3, but it just stinks at D1.
Either way, I have an idea to improve the assistant coach search that also addresses the problem raised by gomiami1972 about geographically isolated schools.
1. Allow the assistant coach to search players within a given radius of a location other than your own school's campus. For instance, if I coach Tennessee, rather than asking my assistant coach to find people within 200 miles of Knoxville, I can ask my assistant coach to find somebody within 200 miles of Memphis or within 200 miles of New York. The prices for this, of course, would increase based on where you're asking him to go. Finding five guys within 200 miles of home would cost $350, as it does now. Finding five people within 200 miles of Memphis (350 miles away) would cost $520 ($350 + $170, which is the cost to scout a recruit that's 350 miles away). Finding five people within 1000 miles of Honolulu would cost $1350 ($350 + $1000).
2. Give the assistant coach two options: find new players or scout existing players. If you choose "find new players," the assistant coach finds players that you can't currently see. If you choose "scout existing players," then the assistant coach scouts an additional level for players that you can already see.
The details might need tinkering, but I think this general idea would make the assistant coach a lot more useful, without making it too powerful.
